IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND!
I like to walk around and say this.
November 24th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
The thing is good, but you did a nice job on the titles too.
November 26th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
hah, beautifully done, nice job

@titsonabulldozer
What does “dead” mean? Non-self replicating? Then yes, the original molecules would not have been self replicating individgually, but together…
If life on this earth is intelligently (probably the intelligences first run at creating life, clearly some ethics violations went on here) designed, who/what designed it and how did they come to be? And if you say it/they just were then why can not the molecules in the universe that assemble themselves based on laws?

This is precisely why I no longer get invited to dinner parties.
November 28th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
@daymyth When you die, you’ll probably know what it means by then.
Or rather you won’t. Because you’ll be dead.
November 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
When I “die” all that will happen is the electrical activity and chemical gradients in my brain stop. If you were to take my heart out and feed it all the required nutrients, it could go on being “alive”. As could stem cells from my bone marrow. Or any other living cell shortly after my death.
So perhaps you would like to explain your self further?
November 29th, 2009 at 2:33 am
Perhaps here it is important to make the distinction between being alive and being conscious or having the ability to become conscious.
November 29th, 2009 at 3:06 am
Well the original poster I was questioning about was talking about abiogenesis. So dead cannot mean conscious… Well it shouldn’t…
November 29th, 2009 at 6:26 am
I hate to tell you, but your brain is you. If your brain stops working, you cease to be alive. There’s no soul, it’s all in your head, both metaphorically and literally.

I like this song. however i find it preachy and over bearing
D
though this is somewhat ironic seeing as I’m a dawkins fan …

Albsolute genius. Nobody other than Tim Minchin can combine such serious critisism of homiopatic medican at the same time as being funny. I love his comedy, its unique.
November 29th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
I’m well aware that that is the most likely scenario. However the only consciousness we are aware of requires a brain to function. So I stand by my statements regarding abiogenesis. There is from memory, chemotropic bacteria that communicate through radioactive decay. So if you consider communication consciousness then…
November 29th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Also you may have been more convincing were you to cite how we are aware that a physical brain is required for proper coherent consciousness. We see this with experiments regarding brain damaged patients, split brain patients and patients who have had parts of there brain removed. It appears that consciousness is directly tied to the brain.

fantastic

Actually it’s “She opines over her Cabernet Sauvignon vis-รก-vis some unhippily empirical comment made by me.”. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most widely recognized red wine grape varieties, so she is obviously drinking whine whilst saying it.

“Science adjusts its views
Based on whats observed.
Faith is the denial of observation,
so that belief can be preserved.”
This is so true!!!!
Faith (Religion) Is Denial of what has been proven by Science!
Religion is there for people who can’t face reality!

I love this!

Clever. Too bad Storm had to be an airhead, because her starting points are accurate. Aspirin is a great med as it is very close to tree bark. The tree bark of course works – pharmaceautical co. take the natural compound synthesize it and call it medicine. Now ask anyone who has smoked reefer and taken pharma’s version ‘Marinol’ which works better to abate nausea. …and so it goes.

Like in ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ -that’s pretty good ol’ son… Go macro and micro and it very quickly becomes apparent that the Sciences and our 5 senses is only a tiny fraction of reality. I think the author knows this, if so THAT is clever. Faith will not give empirical evidence… which should bring you right back to his countenance.

Tim Minchin is a fucking legend.
December 2nd, 2009 at 8:21 pm
@andymantoonarmy
Reality is there for people who can’t face faith. To think that this defiled world is as good as it gets is frightening.
December 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
So you can’t face the frightening nature of reality? Surely hypocrisy.
December 3rd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
4:45 I’ve held this belief for so long Its great to hear Tim shares it. In my opinion “mediums” are basically ghouls who make a sordid living by taking advantage of the pain, misery and grief of people who feel the loss of someone so keenly that they’d pay any price for one more moment together. they’re calculating, cynical & sick. it should be made a crime as surely as swindling grannies out of thousands for fixing a few tiles on their roof is a crime. (vent over, feel better now. thanks)

i find it ironic that you are obviously bored by the stagnancy of religion. And yet you rambled at a dinner party, detracting from the enjoyment of many competent people. Also, I’ll have it noted that you undoubtedly make these comments moment to moment, greatly stifling your own inner scientist, which by the way, you may know is actually founded by the church. Faith also pertains intelligence of the spiritual community. Multiple minds of one mind. that’s what gives me a hard-on (new) Storm
