Claims are not important to me, it’s about understanding how it works. So as with all forms of medical treatments we have the placebo effect of belief. Then on top of that we patient can take a pain killer, which blocks the body’s production of prostaglandins to ease the pain in his back. Or you can take a thin needle and trick the brain into reacting as if the area is damaged more so than it really is and it releases a greater amount of endorphins.
They both work on different levels.
sh0ckerturb0 – Do you have any proof that acupuncture does not provide any benefit besides that from the placebo effect? If so, could you please link us to it, or direct us where to find such studies? I am not necessarily disagreeing with you as I myself am very skeptical about acupuncture. Just if you have any proof, please share it with us as I, and I’m sure others, would be genuinely interested in reading it.
type “harriet hall acupuncture” in google and it is the first link that comes up from a website called science based medicine. This website was founded by contributing scientists from the new england journal of medicine. The link is an article written for laypeople, and has many citations.
claims aren’t important? i mean seriously, what are you even talking about???? isn’t what acupuncture claims it is doing kind of THE WHOLE POINT? either something does what it says or it doesn’t, and there is no evidence that acupuncture does anything more than the placebo effect. Go read about the placebo effect and you will understand everything there is to know about acupuncture.
Acupuncture doesn’t *claim* (there’s that word) to heal or work through releasing a greater amount of endorphins, it claims to heal by manipulating magical “qi” points. The reason we know it doesn’t do anything more than release endorphins and enduce the placebo effect is because of SCIENCE based medicine, acupuncturists have never made these claims. You are a very confused person.
If you read my post I even stated it’s irrelevant. Have fun mixing concrete for a living. Moron detector off.
@ spammaplease
By the way i love people like you, you always manage to make sure my fries are piping hot at lunch time and to remember to double bag my groceries.
@spammaplease Maybe if you weren’t such a uneducated dipshit, you would know the difference between OPINION and SCIENCE, but alas, the concepts escape the void of matter between your ears.
The whole concept of Qi, meridians, darker areas are problem areas, and whatever other explanations acupuncturists give have always seemed far-fetched and illogical to me, simply used because when the treatment was first introduced, they did not have a good understanding of how the human body works. I still think there is tons we dont know about the human body and life in general, and that acupuncture could work through methods we dont yet understand.
That being said, the studies suggesting the benefits are simply a placebo response, even without a perfect placebo control, are very convincing. All I can say is that if you believe acupuncture works, and find that it does, perhaps it should be used to possibly treat a condition in a situation where the other alternative is taking a drug that may cause harmful side effects.
Wrong.
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years; I doubt that it is some crazy joke or all the placebo effect–which is usually very short lived. Asians are far healthier than any Westerner. The Japanese smoke more cigarettes than we do, and their life expectancy is at least five-seven years higher. I am not against medicine, but if you have a chronic health problem, there is very little modern Western medicine can do to help you.
Wow. You Are either misinformed or plain stupid (maybe both). I’m speechless
Um, no, what I have said is fact. Do your reserach. Let us take chronic pain. If you have chronic pain, the most Western medicine can do is pescrible some drug to cover up the symptoms or perform a surgery that could be risky and may even make things worse. Hundreds of thousands of people die each year from adverse drug reactions.
LOL! theres no point in discussion with a true believer like you.. you’re so ass backwards i don’t even know where to begin. Research? LMAO
seems like this practitioner went a little too far in my opinion. However, go over to China and something like this is considered minor. If it takes away the pain, and it has for me, then whos to say its ridiculous. Hell, people get steroids injected into their spine, discs fused, etc. an people just seem to accept that.
If its been used for thousands of years then how come thousands of years ago people didn’t live that long?
It is true that humans live longer today then they did even two hundred years ago, but humans are far sicker today. Sanitation has allowed more babies to survive past birth (and mothers as well); besides sanitation, modern Western medicine does not extend life…unless you are already connected to life support tubes. They basically just babysit your condition with some kind of drug. I am not saying that acupuncture cures anything, but I would rather do that before trying medicine.
If you were hit by a bus would you rather go to an emergency room or an acupuncturist?
The emergency room. The reason why is because getting hit by a bus is an acute (or emergency) health condition. I would want to make sure that I had no brain damage or anything else that needed medicine (at that point) or an operation to fix before it became worse. What I mean are the after effects (like chronic pain). I would rather try acupuncture or chiropratic first before taking some kind of pill that may have terrible side effects. Physical therapy would likely help as well.
So we are sicker but healthier at the same time? RIGGGHHHHHTTTT. The reason human life span has doubled in the past 200 years is because of the SCIENTIFIC METHOD, which legitimate medicine is BASED ON. You are reality challenged.
The reason you would choose the emergency room is because they used SCIENCE BASED MEDICINE, that has REAL results for REAL problems. Acupuncture isn’t used for anything with a definitive outcome because *gasp* IT DOESN’T WORK beyond placebo effect.
any form of acupuncture is based on the idea that essence exists. I personally believe that existence precedes essence.
i personally believe (lol at “personally believe” isn’t saying “i believe” by definition “personal”) that “essence” is a bunch of new age spiritual nonsense, with zero scientific basis, made up for con artists to sell scam treatments like acupuncture.
To be fair, the only thing we know for certain is that there is some form of existence in occurence; we may be perceiving it wrong but we feel it is there= I think therefore I am as Descartes said and also see the Matrix. My point is that science takes faith like everything else for all things are gambling. I choose to believe in true love which is eternal and between one man and one woman. Peace
